BITF Presents: Another Comic You should Read

Recently (two days ago) I finally received my tpb copy of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s 1996 largely ignored, but incredibly brilliant Flex Mentallo. It was a book I’ve read about for years here and there, either being championed as amazing or “I just didn’t get it”, and as a big fan of the Morrison/ Quitely duo, I finally I ordered a copy off Amazon.

My Single Favorite Comic Page Of All Time

I’ve grown up reading comics for as long as I can remember, and probably became serious about them when I was around 11 or so. Among all of the stories and scenes and panels that litter my head, there is one page that sits above them all.

Some Of My Favorite Comic Covers

Batman x Grendel

My dad used to have this comic when I was a youth and I would just stare at the cover. I never even opened it to read, I was just mesmerized by the minimalist approach used, especially during the early 90’s when everything in comics was super over the top and I had never seen anything like it up to that point in my life.

JLA #18

One of the great things about Morrison’s run on JLA was that every issue was written to be a summer blockbuster. Even though you know that basically the good guys always save the day in mainstream comics, I remember being a teenager and just thinking “well, how the fuck are they going to get out of this one?”. This Howard Porter cover totally had me hooked.

Spectacular Spiderman #101

For the record, any one who knows me knows I have a disdain for all things Marvel. That being said, this minimalist cover and use of negative space hits every creative button I love.

Detective Comics #648

Once again another Matt Wagner/ Batman cover that I’ve never even seen the inside of. I was obsessed with this cover as a kid and just recently re-ordered just to have it sit my room so I can stare at it as an adult.

Amazing Spiderman #45

John Romita Jr is a comic book Gawd. This cover gave me a headache the first time I ever saw it just trying to wrap my head around not only what was happening but how he even thought of drawing it like this.

Meg Myers x Heart Heart Head

clearly I enjoy white women with haunting voices tbh

Kevin Smith interviews Jim Lee

Jim Lee is hands down my all time favorite comic book artist, from X-Men to WildCATS to Batman to controlling the direction of the entire DC Universe. Kevin Smith sits down with the comic GAWD in a two part interview for his Fat Man On Batman blog. A def must listen for any fan. Bruce Timm and Alex Toth are the artists who have influenced most and motivate me to be a better artist, Jim Lee is the guy who makes me happy to just spend hours looking at his art.
